IVF/ICSI

 (In vitro fertilization/Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process of collecting eggs from the wife and sperm from the husband and fertilizing them in the Embryology Laboratory. In order to increase chances of fertilization, a single sperm is injected into each of the retrieved eggs using a precision needle in a process called Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

What Are The Benefits Of IVF-ICSI?

ICSI has been shown to improve the fertilization rate in the vast majority of cases, and it may be especially helpful in the following cases:

  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm motility
  • High amount of abnormal sperm
  • Retrograde ejaculation
  • Vasectomy
  • Immunological factors
  • Other conditions that prevent fertilization of the egg

What Are The Steps And Duration Of An IVF-ICSI Cycle?

During the initial consultation, our physicians will take a detailed medical history and perform a thorough check-up that includes an ultrasound scan and blood tests to check hormonal levels in the women.
Moreover, male evaluation will be performed via a semen analysis.

Based on these evaluations, a personalized treatment plan will be customized to suit your case.
In the case that IVF-ICSI is treatment choice for you, the following treatment plan will be conducted over a period of 21-25 days.

Ovarian Stimulation (7 To 10 Days):

On Day 3 of the Menstrual cycle, you will be prescribed medication to stimulate the growth of multiple follicles in your ovaries. During this time, the follicular growth will be monitored through ultrasound to evaluate the growth of the eggs. Hormone levels will also be evaluated during this period via blood tests. 36 – 40 hours before the scheduled Egg Retrieval, an HCG “trigger” shot will be given to induce maturation of the eggs within a scheduled timeframe.

    Egg Retrieval (OPU):

Eggs are retrieved using a thin ultrasound-guided needle during a short procedure under sedation which ensures that you are comfortable during the procedure. The number of eggs retrieved will depend on your body’s response to the medication.

    Sperm Collection and ICSI:

On the day of Egg Retrieval, a semen sample will be provided by your partner and used to fertilize the retrieved eggs. To increase chances of fertilization, a single sperm is injected into each egg using a precision needle in a method called ICSI.

    Embryo Transfer (ET):

Embryo Transfer is a minor procedure that does not require sedation. It involves returning the embryos on the third or 5th day after fertilization. Following the procedure, hormone levels are requested via a blood test to confirm pregnancy.

    Possible Genetic Testing (GT):

If you are planning to have a Comprehensive Chromosomal Screening (CCS) or aiming for gender Selection or Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) to prevent passing on a hereditary disease that is known to be present in the family, it is important to note that 3 to 5 days after the Egg Retrieval and fertilization, a biopsy will be taken from each embryo. The biopsy is usually taken on the 3rd day and tested in our Genetics Lab. The healthy embryos are then transferred to the uterus.
